The Merchants of Bollywood is a theatrical dance spectacular, which charts the enchanting history of the world’s largest and most prolific film industry and the dynasties of stars that have lit its way over generations.
Written and directed by Toby Gough, The Merchants of Bollywood is inspired by the story of the Merchant family dynasty, who for generations have been Bollywood leading lights as choreographers, film-makers and musicians. Its plot is based on the biography of Vaibhavi Merchant, the musical’s choreographer, a huge Bollywood star known as the Princess of Romance, whose great grandfather, Shri Sundar Prasta, was a highly regarded expert in the Indian classical dance form Kathak. With music by two other Merchant scions – brothers Salim and Sulaiman – the show is a celebratory family affair, with blood ties and creativity interwined in its glitzy heart.
Featuring a cast of 34 dancers and musicians, 7 actors 20 production assistants and 1,200 costumes direct from Film City, Mumbai – the home of Bollywood Cinema, many of the cast have featured in smash hit movies such as Devdas, Lagaan and the most recent blockbuster Bunty aur Babli.
The only truly authentic musical that uses actors and dancers entirely from the Bollywood city in Mumbai, The Merchants of Bollywood transcends time and is a touching tribute to the classic songs of yesterday and the scorching high-energy hits of today.
